Flying high
Loved the film, Up? I did... and I must confess, it made me cry too. I am also just a bit of a hot air balloon fan... You can get some pretty amazing and sometimes surprising sights from them, but in Bristol this weekend, they look pretty incredible from below too.
Every August for over 30 years now, there's a sight to behold in the skies over Bristol. The largest of its kind, the Bristol International Ballon Fiesta is here and if you're looking to getaway this weekend, it's worth a visit… and it's completely free!
Over 100 hot air balloons (look out for special shaped ones too!) get ready for lift-off at 6am and 6pm from Ashton Court over four days. Saturday night sees the second and last Night Glow of the event where 30 hot air balloons glow in time to music. A spectacular fireworks display finishes the evening off.

This year also features a dare-devil show by Blades, a four-plane stunt team doing a series of over 30 crazy (well, I think they must be!) manoevres in the air. If you're a big fan of all things flight-related, this is one event you shouldn't miss!
If you do plan to go, a popular spot to see the balloons rise is on top of the hill by Church Wood. I'm not kidding about it being popular either so if you want to go, plan for a late afternoon picnic with some goodies and a rug before the mass ascent at 6pm. Bring some warm clothing too - especially if you're planning to stay for the fireworks.

There is car parking available on-site but you'll need to book to make sure you get a spot. You can book car parking on the Fiesta website here. Alternatively, you can check Travel Bristol for more information on car parks in the city.
And if you need a car hire to get you there, see our car hire locations in this handy map of UK car hire. Get a quote on car hire there too!
