Recent research from M&S Money shows that Brits will actually be better off taking their holiday abroad than staying here for the Olympics this summer. Comparing a holiday in Alicante with one in London over the first week of the Olympics was found to be up to a whopping £700 cheaper! And with the Euro still not looking so strong against the Pound, that’s an awful lot of Euros you can either save for your next holiday or splash out extra big on your summer trip abroad this year.
Other destinations they found to be cheaper than London include Marseille, France, Bodrum, Turkey, Faro in Portugal and even a all the way to the Far East with a week in Hua Hin, Thailand costing £200 cheaper. Despite the findings, M&S Money also report that out of the 2000 people they survey, over half of them are choosing a ‘staycation’ rather than a holiday abroad – lots believing it to be cheaper to stay closer to home.
London on the cheap
Accommodation and spending money are big factors as to London’s sky rocket prices. As for me, well, I’m really looking forward to sticking around the capital for the Olympics – although, as I live here, I’ll at least not be paying extra for accommodation. But if you are thinking about a trip to London, you could always consider couchsurfing (though if you are, I’d get those requests in quickly!!), a house swap or even camping to cut down on accommodation costs. I’m still thinking positively that all this rain now might mean we’ll have a drier and sunnier second half of summer (a girl can always hope, right?!).

Also, eating out less will help – check out local markets (London has some amazing markets that make for a lovely way to spend a few hours) and stores and pick up food for picnics (remember, we’re being optimistic about the weather!). And if you’re a confident street cyclist or at least braver than me, why not pick up one of the Cycle Hire bikes which only cost £1 to access for 24 hours and you can use them for up to 30 minutes for free! For days out, train prices tend to be steep – especially if you haven’t booked way, way in advance so a London car hire is likely to work out cheaper especially if there’s a group of you and we've got UK car hire throughout London.
